STOCKTON, CA – Maestro Peter Jaffe conducts the Stockton Symphony’s season-closing Classics concerts featuring Italian pianist Antonio Pompa-Baldi on Thursday, April 12, and Saturday, April 14. The concerts will be held at the Warren Atherton Auditorium on the San Joaquin Delta College campus.
Mr. Pompa-Baldi will be performing Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3 in C major. Prokofiev conceived the Third Concerto as a virtuoso vehicle for himself; he played the first performance with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra on December 17, 1921, and it became his favorite offering on concert programs throughout the U.S. and Europe. The work, which became immensely popular, is also immensely difficult.
The program will also include Revueltas’ Sensemayá, a rhythmically charged tone poem with no holds barred—and even a tuba solo, and Ravel’s Daphnis et Chloé, Suites Nos. 1 and 2, which include magnificent orchestrations of pirates, a glorious sunrise, alluring lush melodies, and a frenzied “joyous tumult” that raises the roof!
Mr. Pompa-Baldi has toured extensively in four continents and has appeared with many leading orchestras, including the Orchestre National de Paris-Radio France, the Houston Symphony, the Boston Pops, the Pacific Symphony, and the symphonies of Fort Worth, Syracuse Columbus, Charleston and Spokane, among others.
He also appeared in a documentary on the Eleventh Van Cliburn International Piano Competition which premiered in October 2001 on PBS and appeared again on PBS in the documentary “Concerto: A Sense of Self,” featuring his performance of Prokofiev’s Concerto No. 3 with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra – the work he will perform with the Stockton Symphony.
