Congressman Jerry McNerney (CA-11) hosted a workshop to provide one-on-one assistance to seniors with obtaining benefits, on Wednesday, December 14th at the Arnold Rue Community Center.

Representatives from the Centers for Medicare, the Social Security Administration and Health Insurance Counseling and Advocacy Program (HICAP) offered assistance such as applying for Social Security and Medicare benefits, checking on the status of a previous application, and obtaining help with missing Social Security payments. “The paperwork tends to be very confusing, and can be very difficult to navigate.  Especially at the SS offices, the lines can be incredibly long and, for many seniors, just getting to the offices can be problematic.” said Lauren Smith.

Kenneth Johnson, Stockton Resident waited for his turn for a consultation to get a better understanding on how to file Social Security benefits.

“This is the first the step for me to get my papers together and so they get can help me fill out my paperwork correctly …because if you don’t have it right the first time, they will send it back you” said the veteran Johnson.

“It is important that seniors understand the full range of benefits and services that are available to them.  He [congressman McNerney] and his office are a great resource for helping folks to cut through red tape.” said Smith.

Often many individuals, especially seniors, find it difficult to afford a health insurance plan or to pay overwhelming health care bills; one of the reasons the government program Medicare was created.

“I am bringing in Medicare plan A and B and knowledge for the beneficiaries to see what kind of assistance they need and what other things we can do for them,” said Health Insurance Specialist Medicare and Medicaid Dickson Chan while he waited for his next consultation.
