On Thursday, August 19, 2010, San Joaquin County officials did launch a new prescription drug discount program. According to the San Joaquin County Health Care Services Agency and Financial Marketing Concepts Inc., (FMC) —a Florida private company— the new Coast2Coast Rx card will allow all county residents, regardless of income, age, or health status to participate in the program, saving cardholders an average of 45% in 2010 off the retail cost of prescription drugs.
The Rx card will be distributed free of charge and may be used at all pharmacy chains and most independent pharmacies in San Joaquin County and includes over 60,000 drugs in its formulary. There are no eligibility requirements so the card is expected to have a sizeable impact on uninsured residents, people facing high insurance deductibles or in need of prescriptions not covered by their current plans.
Providing savings for residents through the program will come at no expense to the County; in fact, FMC will pay the County a royalty for each filled prescription and the royalty does not increase cardholder cost, said officials. Besides the discounts on prescriptions, the card also offers 50% to 80% discounts for lab and imaging tests. The card will be available at most participating pharmacies, libraries and County health facilities. Residents will also be able to print the card, check their prescription prices and view the nearest participating locations at http://www.coast2coastrx.com/sanjoaquinca
